The 48th Eurovision song contest was held at the Skonto Hall in Riga, Latvia with 26 countries taking place in the contest.  Last year's winner Marie N was one of the hosts of the show.  Favourites for winning Eurovision  this year were the Russian entry sung by the female group TATU who have had international success in the past.   In the end though it was Turkeys entry that shone collecting 167 points followed by Belgium.  The Belgium entry Urban Trad unusally chose to sing their song in an imaginary language their gamble almost paid off as they came lost out to Turkey by 2 points

There was a minor controversy when the United Kingdoms entrant, Jemini received the ultimate Eurovision embarrassment of "null points", many commentators felt although the song was by no means excellent it was a start of a backlash against the UK in view of the ongoing conflict in Iraq.

On the day of the contest the bookmaker William Hill gave odds on Russia as favourites to win the Eurovision contest.  Austria were placed at 100-1 and favourites to finish last but ended up coming in 6th place.

Sertab Erener

Turkish born Sertab performed the song "Every Way That I Can" which was sung in English, and following her success at this years event she released her first English Language album called Boundaries. Prior to the contest she was a very popular Turkish pop star and had released 4 albums all to critical and commercial success. She has worked with the likes of acclaimed produced Desmond Child and Ricky Martin.
